Baseball battles but falls at Wilmington

WILMINGTON, Delaware – The American International College baseball team had a comeback effort come up just short in a 10-8 loss at Wilmington University on Wednesday, March 13.

AIC is now 4-10 on the season.

The Wildcats jumped out to an early 4-0 lead with two runs in each of the first two innings; a two-run double by D'Angelo Ponce and a two-run home run by Cam Trego were the hits that drove in runs.

AIC countered in the fourth. With Yeudy Ramirez and Shea Cucinotta on base, Chad Lavelle tripled into the right-center gap, and subsequently came home on a Brendan Edvardsen single.

In the bottom of the fourth, Wilmington scored an unearned run, and then erupted for five in the fifth with a three-run home run by Brandon Grygo and a two-run single by AJ Tropiano.

Facing a large deficit, AIC's comeback effort began in earnest in the eighth. Josh Frometa reached on an error to lead off and Connor Daly walked. Cucinotta singled to load the bases. Four straight free passes followed, as Lavelle, Edvardsen, and Ryan Lavelle all walked before Kiernan Caffrey was hit by a pitch, each pushing a run across. Jackson Haker hit a fly to right that scored Edvardsen to cut the gap to 10-8.

Unfortunately, the Yellow Jackets could not scrape two more across, going down 1-2-3 in the ninth for the final result.

Northeast-10 Conference play opens on the upcoming weekend as the Yellow Jackets visit The College of Saint Rose on Saturday, March 16 for a doubleheader starting at noon and then host the Golden Knights the following day at noon for one.
