Field Hockey blanks Slippery Rock to open 2023

OXFORD, Ohio – The American International College field hockey team opened the 2023 season with a bang, sinking Slippery Rock University 2-0 at the Theresa Check Invitational, hosted by the University of Miami of Ohio, on Friday, September 1.

AIC is now 1-0 on the season.

The Yellow Jackets opened the scoring in the second quarter as rookie Mayra Bok took the ball to the stroke dot and fired a shot. Though Rock goalkeeper Grace Burker made the initial save, Bok stuck with the rebound and pushed it past the prone netminder for her first collegiate goal at 6:02 of the second.

Midway through the third, AIC added to the lead. Morgan Martellio carried the ball up the right side of the field and fired a hard pass to the netfront, where Abby Clark was waiting. She deflected the ball past Burker and into the cage for her first of the season at 9:10.

At the other end, Taylor Wildes was brilliant in her season debut. The Rock offense turned up the pressure following AIC's second goal, firing seven of their eight shots on target in the last 17:14 of play, but the graduate student did not waver, stopping everything that was thrown at her for her second career shutout.

The Yellow Jackets will next face Maryville University on Sunday, September 3 at 2:30 p.m. to finish off the Theresa Check Invitational.
