Field Hockey silences Ravens in home opener

SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts – The American International College field hockey team held off an early push by Franklin Pierce University before ultimately winning 3-0 on Tuesday, September 12.

AIC is now 3-1 on the season.

The Ravens had control early, firing five shots in the first frame, with three coming on target. Taylor Wildes kept the back of the cage clean, allowing the Yellow Jackets to escape the period scoreless.

In the second, AIC broke through. Brooke Szafran's insert on a penalty corner came to Mia Wood on the left side of the circle, and she wired it into the right corner of the cage for her first of the season at 8:42.

In the third, the Yellow Jackets put the game away. It started with a goal off of play in the field, with a great cross from Mar Busqueta to Fenna Voll, who was open just above the stroke dot. Voll caught the pass in stride and fired it across from right to left into the cage at 5:21, scoring her first of the season.

Less than two minutes later, AIC made it 3-0 on a corner. The play turned into a netmouth scramble, and Morgan Martellio deflected the ball to Abby Clarke, who was able to push home her second of the season at 7:01 of the frame.

From there, the Yellow Jackets defenses held up. Wildes made two more stops to complete an eight-save shutout, her second of the season, and improve to 3-1 in goal.

AIC next hosts Southern Connecticut State University on Saturday, September 16 at 3:00 p.m.
