Golding scores 22 in men's basketball loss at Southern Connecticut

NEW HAVEN, Connecticut - The American International College men's basketball team fell just short against Southern Connecticut State University on Saturday, February 5 in Northeast-10 Conference action.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Owls wasted no time defending their court as they led 14-0 almost four minutes in. Graduate Xion Golding scored the first points for the Yellow Jackets at the stripe and nailed the team's first field goal.
  • AIC started chipping away at their deficit and took a one-point lead on a jumper by junior Frankyn Batista. Rookie Donovan Miller stole the ball on the next possession which ended up at the bottom of the nylon off Miller's hand from deep. The next AIC possession junior Walter Covington flushed one with authority and forced the Owls to take a timeout.
  • Southern Connecticut ended the half with a 12-4 run as they took the 37-35 lead at the break.
  • The Yellow Jackets trailed 57-43 when Miller finished a layup in transition and got AIC rolling. A 17-6 run by the Yellow Jackets cut their deficit to three with 5:49 to play.
  • With just over 2:10 remaining rookie Buka Peikrishvili grabbed an offensive rebound and put it back for two as the Yellow Jackets then trailed 72-66. After forcing a miss on the other end Miller got the ball in transition and added a pair to the scoreboard.
  • The Owls tried to burn some time but missed a three at the end of the shot clock and Batista dunked on the other end to bring it within two. SCSU hit a three on their next possession. AIC answered with a three by Golding to keep the distance at two with 12 seconds left.
  • Southern Connecticut hit a layup with seven seconds left. Miller hit a three as the horn went off but it was not enough as the Owls took the game 77-76.
