Comeback falls short as ice hockey drops opener at Canisius

BUFFALO, New York – The American International College ice hockey team fell 5-2 to Canisius College in Atlantic Hockey Association play on Friday, November 11.

AIC drops to 5-5-2 with the loss, with a 3-4-0-0-0-0 AHA record.

After a scoreless first period, the host Golden Griffins jumped out to a 2-0 second-period lead. Simon Gravel finished a chance from Jackson Decker at 4:56 to open the scoring, and Markus Boguslavsky doubled the lead at 9:21.

In the third, AIC drew a penalty, and converted. Oscar Geschwind potted his fifth of the year just 2:27 in off of assists from Brian Kramer and Josh Barnes.

The Golden Griffins kept AIC off the board until late in the period when they extended the lead to 3-1; Ryan Miotto scored at 15:28. The goal proved crucial, because at 16:49 Blake Bennett notched his AHA-leading ninth of the season on a feed from Jordan Biro.

The Yellow Jackets pulled their goalkeeper for a sixth attacker in the late stages of the game, but Canisius hit the empty net twice for the 5-2 final.

Jarrett Fiske made 26 saves on 29 shots in the contest.

The two teams finish the series at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 12.
