Ice hockey leads AHA with 26 All-Academic Selections; Barnes, Kobryn earn Student-Athlete of the Year

WINTHROP, Massachusetts – The Atlantic Hockey Association announced its 2022-23 All-Academic Team and Student-Athletes of the Year on Tuesday, June 20. The American International College ice hockey team tied for the conference lead with 26 selections, and boasted a pair of Student-Athlete of the Year winners in Josh Barnes and Troy Kobryn.

Per the league release, "the Atlantic Hockey All-Academic Team honors those student-athletes who posted a GPA of 3.0 or above for both semesters of the 2022-23 academic year," while the Student-Athlete of the Year is awarded to those who post a GPA of 4.00 for the academic year.

Both Barnes and Kobryn earned the award for the first time in their first season with the Yellow Jackets. Their selections mark the 14th and 15th Student-Athlete of the Year honors collected in the head coaching tenure of Eric Lang.

AIC's 26 All-Academic selections, tied with Bentley University and Niagara University, give Lang a total of 184 selections in his seven seasons at the helm of the ice hockey program.

Among AIC's All-Academic honorees, Kobryn was the lone graduate student; five seniors earned the award in Blake Bennett, Brett Callahan, Jarrett Fiske, Dustin Manz, and Eric Otto. The junior class was represented by six student-athletes: Jordan Biro, Julius Janhonen, Brian Kramer, Darwin Lakoduk, Matt Rickard, and Nico Somerville.

Four sophomores garnered recognition, with Oscar Geschwind, Luis Lindner, Reggie Millette, and Zach Purcell taking the honor, while the freshman class saw 10 of its members lauded. In addition to Barnes, Andrew Amousse, Grayson Dietrich, Timofei Khokhlachev, Alexander Malinowski, Hunter McCurdy, Casey McDonald, Brett Rylance, Jake Sacratini, and Casper Soderling were the rookie awardees.
