Ice Hockey ties Lakers to win season series

WEST SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts - The American International College ice hockey team tied Mercyhurst University 2-2 in an Atlantic Hockey Association matchup on Saturday, February 17. The Lakers took the extra AHA point in the shootout.

AIC is now 15-14-3 overall with an 11-10-3-2-1-1 record in the AHA.

The first period was all AIC as the Yellow Jackets converted two early Balise Toyota Power Plays. Julius Janhonen was the sharpshooter, scoring both of the goals; the first was a shot off of a defenseman that deflected in 2:46 into play, while the second was a one-timer at 7:39. Evan Stella and Jordan Biro assisted on the first goal, while Brett Rylance and Dustin Manz picked up the helpers on the second goal, which was Janhonen's fifth of the season.

In the second, it was the Lakers who took advantage of opportunities, with Barrett Brooks and Cameron Ricotta netting goals to tie the game 2-2.

The third period and overtime both saw quality chances, but Owen Say and Alexandros Aslanidis slammed the door shut on further opportunities to keep the game even through 65 minutes.

The shootout went four rounds, with Brooks scoring the winner to give the Lakers two points.

AIC closes the regular season on the road at Army West Point with two games, the first of which is Friday, February 23 at 7:05 PM.
