Softball snaps skid, splits at Queens

NEW YORK, New York - The American International College softball team split a series with Queens College on Thursday, March 30.

AiC is now 4-17 on the season.

Both teams opened the game with a first-inning run; AIC's came with back-to-back two out hits, as Mackenzie Berman doubled and Victoria Andrade drove her home with a single to left. In the second, AIC then added four, with all the damage coming with two outs as well. Taylor Murphy and Brianna Harzula each had hits, and swiped third and second respectively. That set the stage for Destiny McGrath to double them home. Abigail Wells then walked, and Berman came up with another double, driving them both in.

Queens rallied, and after scoring one in the fourth, the Knights put a four of their own on the board to take a 6-5 lead after five. However, AIC was not to be denied. in the sixth, an error allowed McGrath to reach, and Wells followed with a bunt single. They both advanced on a Berman flyout and then scored as Andrade came through with a two-run single.

AIC added insurance in the seventh thanks in part to a pair of errors; Harzula and Madison Levesque scored on the second miscue. Julia Krijgsman then came back into the circle to pitch in the bottom half and closed the game; she finished the win by inducing a 4-3 double play.

Queens took an early 1-0 lead in the second matchup, and the score remained that way through the fifth when Andrade led off with a double. She was pinch-ran for by Sarah Falcone and ultimately came home on a sacrifice fly by Harzula. AIC then scored again to take the lead in the sixth, as Wells singled to right and made it all the way to third on a defensive miscue, scoring on Berman's subsequent single.

Unfortunately, the Knights bounced back, and with four consecutive two-out hits, pushed three runs across, making the difference in the 4-2 final.

AIC returns home on Sunday, April 2 for a doubleheader with Felician University beginning at noon.
