Softball collects 20 hits in split with Post

SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts - The American International College softball team had a strong day with the bats in a split with Post University on Thursday, April 20, falling 5-2 but then winning 8-1.

AIC is now 6-32 on the season.

Post's offense collected its runs early in the opener, scoring three in the first, with two unearned after a throwing error extended the frame. The Eagles then added a pair in the second.

AIC battled back with a leadoff home run by Kodi Gora in the third, a towering shot to left center, and Mackenzie Berman drove in Sarah Falcone with a fifth-inning base hit, but the Yellow Jackets could not score again in the setback.

Post opened game two with a leadoff home run, but were mystified by Riley Sullivan, who limited the Eagles to just five hits thereafter across the game.

That allowed AIC's offense to shine. Samantha Sanchez started it in the second with a walk, and advanced to third on a Gora hit. She then beat the throw home on a McGrath grounder to short to tie the game. Two batters later, Abigail Wells smacked a double down the right field line, putting both Gora and McGrath across home plate and giving AIC its first lead of the day.

The team kept it going in the third. Berman led off with a walk, and Victora Andrade then hit a rope to left that the outfielder could not track down. Brianna Harzula followed with a single, driving Berman in, and Gora knocked Andrade home with a hit to left, smartly taking second with the throw. Leah Twyman then came in to pinch hit, and the move paid off as she also drove the ball to deep left, scoring Gora and Harzula and pushing AIC's lead to 7-1.

The final run for AIC came in the fifth; after a double by Sanchez, she was lifted for pinch-runner Laila Cofone. The speedy outfielder advanced on a grounder and then came in with a sacrifice fly by McGrath.

In the win, Sullivan walked just two and struck out three; she picked up her second consecutive victory as well as her second-straight complete-game effort; in the last 12 innings of work she has a WHIP of 1.00 and an ERA of 0.58.

AIC resumes Northeast-10 Conference play on Saturday, April 22 with a pair against Saint Anselm College.
