Softball falls short to SNHU on Senior Day

SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts - The American International College softball team celebrated its senior class prior to a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader with Southern New Hampshire University, falling 9-3 and 4-2 on Saturday, April 20.

AIC is now 9-19 overall and 3-13 in the NE10.

After two scoreless innings, the Penmen jumped to a 2-0 lead on a home run. They added two more unearned in the top of the fifth after a throwing error, taking a 4-0 lead.

The Yellow Jackets pushed to come back in the home half of the fifth. Destiny McGrath started it off with a solo shot to left field, her team-leading fourth of the season, and Kodi Gora scored on a sacrifice bunt by Brooklyn Cividanes.

Unforunately for AIC, the Penmen bounced right back with a three-run shot in the sixth, and scored twice more in the seventh; the Yellow Jackets scored one more on an RBI single by Brianna Harzula that plated Cividanes but fell 9-3.

The second game started off as a copy of the first; two scoreless innings gave way to a 2-0 Penmen lead on a home run, and the Penmen tacked on another on an error in the frame. Cividanes countered in the fourth, however, smashing a two-run shot to left center. The Yellow Jackets could not muster another run in the contest, despite some chances, and ultimately fell 4-2 after another Penmen solo shot.

Riley Sullivan pitched well despite taking the loss in both games, allowing just eight hits and five earned runs between the 11 innings she threw, striking out eight.

AIC will return to action at noon on Sunday, April 21 at noon to start a doubleheader with Saint Anselm College.
