Women's basketball holds on to beat Mercy, moves to 2-0

SPARKILL, New York - The American International College women's basketball team concluded the opening weekend with a 66-53 win over Mercy College on Saturday, November 13.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

• On the second AIC possession of the game senior guard, Kyla Smith nailed a three-off a pass from senior forward Sara Guntin Barriero. Smith hit a pretty jumper almost two minutes later to give AIC the 5-0 lead.
• The Yellow Jacket defense held the Mavericks scoreless for just over three minutes. After the first points, they went on a tear and lead AIC 24-15 after 10 minutes of play.
• To open the second frame the Yellow Jackets went on an 8-1 run over the first four minutes to make it a two-point game. The Yellow Jackets tied the game at 28 on a three by sophomore guard AJ Washington followed by a jumper by graduate forward Charee Osborne that gave the Yellow Jackets the two-point lead.
• Those five points were part of a 12-0 run that allowed AIC to take the 35-30 lead into the locker room.
• AIC opened the second half with a 6-2 run as they extended their lead to double digits. The teams battled back and forth but the Yellow Jackets held an eight-point lead going into the final quarter.
• A layup by sophomore guard Kayla Robinson with 7:23 on the clock pushed AIC back to a double-digit lead.
• With just over a minute remaining in the game the Mavericks brought their deficit down to nine, but rookie Julie Carbonell Munoz had back-to-back layups to put the game out of reach.
