Robinson scores 19 points in women's basketball win over Adelphi

GARDEN CITY, New York - The American International College women's basketball team continued their road swing with a Northeast-10 Conference matchup at Adelphi University on Saturday, December 4. The Yellow Jackets shot 85.7 percent from the line to take the game 68-66.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Graduate Destine Perry started the scoring with a three off an offensive rebound 45 seconds into the game. Two possessions later junior Rosa Vreugd knocked down a triple and the Yellow Jackets started the game two-of-three from deep. Under a minute later Vreugd hit another triple and gave AIC the 9-3 lead. After 10 minutes of play, the Yellow Jackets and Panthers were tied at 18.
  • With just over a minute and a half remaining in the second quarter junior Zoe Willis nailed a jumper in the paint to give AIC the one-point lead. Perry hit a paint jumper on the next possession before sophomore Julia Carbonell Munoz hit a pair of freebees to give AIC the 37-32 lead at the break.
  • In the third quarter, the two teams each scored 13 points and the Yellow Jackets entered the final quarter with a 50-45 lead.
  • With 2:09 remaining in the game and down two sophomore Kayla Robinson hit a jumper to tie the game. Perry gave AIC the lead with 42 ticks left on a paint jumper.
  • The Panthers gave the Yellow Jackets the ball with 30 seconds remaining on an offensive foul. AIC called a timeout and out of the huddle drew a foul three seconds after the inbounds pass. Perry went to the line and missed the first but hit the second.
  • Adelphi called a timeout to advance the ball and ultimately drew a foul. O'Connell stepped to the line and had the same outcome as Perry on the other end of the floor.
  • AIC called a timeout with 26 seconds left. Both teams committed a turnover on their next possession which gave AIC the ball with 10 seconds left. The Panthers fouled quickly and junior Kyla Smith hit both at the line.
  • With three seconds left the Panthers hit a three to make it a one-point game. Once again Adelphi fouled quickly and Smith went to the line with a pair of seconds on the clock. She hit the first and missed the second. The Panthers gave one last heave but it was no good and the Yellow Jackets escaped with a two-point win.
