WEST HAVEN, Connecticut - The American International College women's basketball team held the University of New Haven to single-digit scoring in two quarters as they knocked off the Chargers 66-54 in Northeast-10 Conference play on Tuesday, December 7.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The two teams were evenly matched in the first 10 minutes of play as the two teams were tied at 15.
  • The Yellow Jackets locked down defensively in the second quarter as they held the Chargers to shooting 20 percent from the field and 12.5 percent from deep.
  • The scoring in the second quarter was started by junior Kyla Smith with a pair of freebies. The two teams exchanged the lead over the first seven and a half minutes.
  • Graduate Destine Perry gave AIC the one-point lead on a pair of free throws with 2:17 left in the first half. On the next AIC possession, Perry hit a three to make it a four-point game. Graduate Sara Guntin Barreiro finished the scoring for the half with a fast-break layup to make it a 30-24 AIC advantage.
  • New Haven scored the first three points of the third quarter, but the Yellow Jackets held the Chargers to just four more points in the frame. AIC held the Chargers scoreless for over six minutes while the Yellow Jackets scored 15 points. With just 10 minutes left to play the Yellow Jackets led 49-31.
  • The Chargers started to make a push in the final frame as they scored the first seven points over 45 seconds to bring their deficit to 11 points. At the 5:27 mark, New Haven had cut it to eight and put some pressure on the Yellow Jackets.
  • Rookie Nora Young made a driving layup with 2:37 on the clock while drawing a foul. She stepped to the line and made to the shot as AIC scored seven of the final eight points to take the game 66-54.

  • The Yellow Jackets will have a week and a half break as they will next take on Saint Michael's College on Saturday, December 18 at home.
