Women's basketball's season comes to an end at St. Anselm

MANCHESTER, New Hampshire - The American International College women's basketball team fell 61-53 to Saint Anselm College on Saturday, February 26 in the first round of the Northeast-10 Conference Championship.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Tied at two over three minutes in, sophomore Julia Carbonell Munoz hit a jumper as AIC went on an 11-2 run over the next two and a half minutes to take the 13-4 lead. The Hawks fought back and tied the game but after 10 minutes of play, AIC led 16-15.
  • The home team used a 13-2 run to open the second quarter and take a 10-point lead. AIC cut into it late, but the Hawks led 30-23 at the break.
  • Trailing 41-28 in the third frame, junior Zoe Willis nailed a three that sparked a run. Two possessions later junior Kyla Smith hit a layup to get AIC's deficit to single digits. As the run continued, sophomore Kayla Robinson and graduate Sara Guntin Barriero each scored two points as the Yellow Jackets made it a four-point game. At the end of the third, the Hawks led 48-39.
  • Saint Anselm added to its lead in the final frame before the Yellow Jackets got rolling. They trailed 55-43 when Carbonell Munoz, Robinson, and graduate Destine Perry each hit a pair of free throws at the line and made it a seven-point game.
  • The Yellow Jackets brought the contest within two possessions with 34 seconds left but the Hawks took the game 61-53.
