Rally falls short as women's basketball streak ends at New Haven

NEW HAVEN, Connecticut - A late rally by the American International College women's basketball team came up short as the Yellow Jackets fell 70-65 at the University of New Haven to end an eight-game win streak.

AIC is now 14-9 overall and 10-5 in the NE10.

Kayla Robinson opened the scoring with a three, but the Chargers scored eight of the next 10 points to lead 8-5 before Taylor Tomlinson landed a layup. Robinson ultimately tied the game 10-10 as she drew a foul while hitting a shot of her own, sinking the free throw for the old-school three. The teams traded points down the stretch of the first, but a three from Kameryn King for New Haven put the Chargers up 18-14 after one.

After shots by both sides kept it close midway through the second, New Haven began to pull away. Lindsey Hogan hit a pair of threes as part of a 10-point run that saw New Haven's lead expand to 13 at 34-21 before Tia-Marie Martinez put a three of her own in to stop the bleeding. That was the last point of the half as AIC entered the break down 34-24.

In the third, AIC cut into the edge on back-to-back triples by Robinson and Martinez, and shrank the deficit to as low as five, but the Chargers answered with an 11-point run to reestablish their advantage. AIC trailed by as much as 18 and was down 55-41 at the end of the quarter.

With just over seven minutes to play, New Haven still led by 17, and at the midpoint of the quarter AIC had not made a field goal. AJ Washington sparked AIC with a pair of layups, and Robinson and Tomlinson each notched four straight AIC points as well. Julia Carbonell Munoz hit a pair of threes in the final minute, but it was not quite enough as New Haven held on for the 70-65 win.

Tomlinson led AIC with 24 points and seven rebounds; Robinson scored 19 points and came up with eight steals as well.

AIC will look to start a new streak on Tuesday, February 7 at Saint Anselm College at 5:30 p.m.
