Women's Soccer stifles D'Youville in season opener

BUFFALO, New York - The American International College women's soccer team opened its 2023 season with a 2-0 win at D'Youville University on Friday, September 1.

AIC is 1-0-0 on the campaign.

The Yellow Jackets struck early to take a 1-0 lead as rookie Natasha Ferreira fired a pass from midfield that split the Saints defense. Gabrielle Williams timed her run perfectly, beating both center backs to the pass as it went by, and waited out the opposing keeper before tucking her first of the year into the net on the bottom left at 15:29.

It looked as though that would be the score at the halftime break, but Hannah Storozuk had other ideas. She intercepted a clearing pass by Saints goalkeeper Kallie Regan, cut to the right to get open at the top right of the 18-yard box, and fired the ball back over Regan into the top right corner for her first as a Yellow Jacket at 43:54.

From there, AIC's defense did its job. First-year goalkeeper Sara Avery only needed to make one stop in earning her first collegiate shutout.

The Yellow Jackets finish the two-game opening trip on Sunday, September 3 with an 11:00 a.m. kickoff at Daemen University.
