Women's Soccer smothers Assumption

SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts – The American International College women's soccer team played one of its most complete games of the year, blanking Assumption University 2-0 at Abdow Field on Saturday, September 30.

AIC moves to 4-2-0 with the win, with a 2-2-0 Northeast-10 Conference record.

The Greyhounds played a strong defensive first half, limiting AIC's chances and generating a few of their own, but rookie goalkeeper Sara Avery was up to the task, stopping four shots in the opening 45.

Late in the half, Head Coach Stephanie Gordon substituted out her starting forwards, and the second unit found the back of the net. A great ball from Wilma Jansson on the right side set up Vasiliki Flaouna for a bid at the top of the box, and she hammered in her first of the year at 42:21.

The Yellow Jackets had to play into the wind in the second, but their defense and midfield play was outstanding, clogging up the field and limiting Assumption to just one shot at the target. That, combined with a great ball from Cameron Wilbur to Charlotte Bernard for an insurance tally, he third of the year, at 82:42, gave AIC what it needed to earn the three points.

Avery improves to 3-1-0 on the season, earning her second shutout.

The Yellow Jackets next host Queens College on Wednesday, October 4 at 3:30 p.m.
