Women's Soccer plays Saint Anselm to scoreless tie

SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts - Two goalkeepers left the pitch satisfied, but no one else did as the American International College women's soccer team and Saint Anselm College ended in a scoreless draw in Northeast-10 Conference play on Saturday, October 14.

AIC is now 5-3-1 with a 2-3-1 NE10 record.

In the 33rd minute, AIC had one of the best opportunities of the game, with a pass that seemed to set up Charlotte Bernard for a breakway, but Bernard was fouled by Saint Anselm's Devan Sherry just above the 18-yard box. After conferring, the referee issued a red card to Sherry, putting the Hawks a player down. AIC missed on the ensuing free kick, however.

Playing man-down did not deter the Hawks from pushing up offensively, and they had three bids turned back by Sara Avery in AIC's net. At the other end, AIC also put three shots to target, but could not solve Maggie Warner.

The closest either team came was in the 74th minute. Sydney Mercier fired a shot that Warner deflected away, giving AIC a corner, and on the cross in, Gabrielle Williams took a bid that beat Warner but clanked out off the crossbar.

Avery totaled five saves for her fourth shutout of her career, in just seven starts.

AIC turns its attention to The College of Saint Rose for a meeting on Wednesday, October 18 at 6:00 p.m.
