Women's Tennis drops close match with Ravens

SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts - The American International College women's tennis team fell 4-3 to Franklin Pierce University on Tuesday, October 10 in Northeast-10 Conference play.

AIC is now 1-6 on the season.

All three doubles matches ended 6-3; AIC's third pairing of Taisha Jones and Charlotte Tvelia defeated Dylan Smith and Sophia Hyres, but the Ravens took the point with Aynara Ferraz Armas and Zoe Asterio-Correa upending Natalija Vlacic and Victoria Azcona, while Telma Lorenzo and Maria Paz Diaz won over Katja Milicevic and Maria Cedeno.

That proved to be the difference in the match, as the teams split singles; Azcona won at second singles when Lorenzo had to withdraw, Cedeno defeated Smith 7-5, 6-1 at fifth singles, and Tvelia won 6-0, 6-1 over Hyres. The closest bout was Ferraz Armas and Vlacic; after the Raven took the first set 6-2, AIC's student-athlete grabbed the second by the same score. The final set was won 6-4 by Ferraz Armas, giving the Ravens the fourth point and the match.

AIC returns to play in the season finale, Sunday, October 15 at New Haven. First serve is set for 1:00 p.m.
