Women's Volleyball buzzes past Owls

SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts - The American International College women's volleyball team had an outstanding showing offensively in a sweep of Northeast-10 Conference foe Southern Connecticut State University, 25-19, 25-15, 25-9, on Tuesday, October 3.

AIC is now 9-6 on the season and 4-0 in NE10 play.

Both teams performed strongly in the first set. The Owls hit .313 as a squad, with 14 kills against just four errors. However, AIC was practically perfect, going the entire set without an attack error and collecting 17 kills to ultimately take the set.

In the second, AIC pulled away more quickly, using a five point run led by the team's middles; Aleksandra Ivanovic contributed a block and two aces, while Amber Williams scored a block and a kill. That put AIC ahead 13-6, and the lead only grew from there until Williams and Paola Soto Burgos combined on a set-point block to put AIC ahead 2-0.

in the third, the Yellow Jackets made it clear they wanted to end the match quickly, scoring an early seven-point run. Ivanovic later added three straight aces to put AIC ahead 15-6. Shortly after, Head Coach Matt Cribbin had the opportunity to bring Victoria Soto Burgos onto the floor, and the rookie made a special moment of it, teaming with her sister Paola on a combo block, the first of her three blocks down the stretch. Dila Derendeli ended the match with a left-to-right shot through the defense.

Ivanovic collected 10 kills on just 12 swings to lead AIC's offense. Paola Soto Burgos had nine, while Dora Butkovic and Kristina Peric each added eight; Butkovic also had a match-best 11 digs. As a team, AIC hit .379 for the match.

The Yellow Jackets will have a restful two weeks, with just one match in the next 13 days. That contest will be Tuesday, October 10 at the University of New Haven at 7:00 p.m.
