Women's Volleyball sweeps Assumption to earn Senior Night win

SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts - The American International College women's volleyball team honored its seniors the right way, dominating Assumption University 25-13, 25-19, 25-12 to close out the 2023 regular season on Saturday, November 11.
AIC finishes the 2023 Northeast-10 Conference campaign at 9-2, and overall is 16-9.
After recognizing Kristina Peric, Dora Butkovic, and Paola Soto Burgos, AIC took to the court, but it was Assumption jumping to a quick 4-1 lead. However, Soto Burgos and Claudia Flores Marrero turned that around quickly, combining for a block, followed by a Soto Burgos kill and a Flores Marrero ace. That put AIC in position for a huge run, including six in a row and 11 of 13 to lead 20-11. Aleksandra Ivanovic ultimately finished the first with a kill to cap a four-point run.
The Greyhounds gave it their all in the second, battling to a 20-19 score and threatening to even up the match. However, AIC had an answer, and a combo block by Ivanovic and Butkovic put Soto Burgos in position to finish the job, and she answered with two kills to close it out and put AIC on the brink of a sweep.
AIC's defense went to work from there, holding Assumption to a negative attack percentage in the third. The Yellow Jackets roared to a 12-3 lead, and built from there to 18-6, allowing Matt Cribbin the ability to substitute in rookie Victoria Soto Burgos to play alongside her older sister. The duo combined for a block, and it was also a block that ended things, with the senior Soto Burgos pairing with Ivanovic to finish off the match.
Paola's 11 kills, 10 digs, and four blocks gave her an impressive line to end the match with; Peric also turned in nine kills, while Ivanovic added eight along with four blocks, and Butkovic notched seven. Alice Di Francesco dished out 31 assists and made eight digs, while Perla Rosa led the match with a dozen digs.
AIC will host Southern New Hampshire University at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 14 in the 2023 Northeast-10 Conference Championship Tournament Quarterfinal Round at the Butova Gym.
