Women's Volleyball silences Owls, closes on clinching NE10 regular season crown

NEW HAVEN, Connecticut - The American International College women's volleyball team picked up its 13th straight win with a 25-21, 25-15, 25-12 sweep of Northeast-10 Conference foe Southern Connecticut State University on Friday, November 8.

AIC is now 14-6 overall and 8-0 in NE10 play.

The Yellow Jackets started a bit flat, falling behind 4-1 early but rallying to tie the set 6-6, and pulled ahead with a pair of three-point runs that included two kills by Carissa Michel. AIC led by as much as six, and though the Owls cut that to two at 23-21, the hosts could get no closer, with a combo block by Victoria Mendez and Aleksandra Lucic finishing the set in AIC's favor.

In the second, AIC's defense shined, as the Yellow Jackets held the Owls to hitting .000, forcing seven attack errors. Janelys Perez Cortes put two shots to the wood at the end to give AIC the set victory, shortly after an 8-2 run by the Yellow Jackets put it out of reach.

Now close to victory, the visiting squad made sure there was no need to extend the match. After Jelena Milovanovic opened the third with a block, AIC pounded down 14 kills on just 26 swings, sprinkling in aces by Daniella Russo-Lolas and Alice Di Francesco as well to build up a 17-7 advantage. The final six points all belonged to AIC, with three of those, including match point, coming off the hand of Chelsea Foulis, with her last attack into the back row eluding the Owls defense to win the match.

Cortes Perez led the match with 10 kills, while Mendez and Michel each had eight; Michel hit .444 on the night in her first matchup against her former team. Mendez also dished 11 assists and Di Francesco passed 14 for kills, while Milovanovic and Perla Rosa also collected five assists each. Rosa led the contest with 13 digs, while Di Francesco and Russo-Lolas each aced three serves.

AIC next heads to Assumption University for its penultimate regular season matchup, a 7:00 p.m. first serve on Tuesday, November 12.
