SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts - In a contest that was contentious from the opening whistle through the last one, the American International College men's soccer team played to a 2-2 tie against Saint Anselm College on Saturday, October 19.
The result brings AIC to 0-6-4 overall and 0-2-3 in Northeast-10 Conference action.
Despite a 6-1 shot advantage for the Hawks, it was AIC taking a 1-0 lead in the first half. The play was brilliant, with Guilherme Afonso dodging past a defender on the left wing before firing a cross that was tipped home inside the 18 by Pietro Botasso at 25:11 for his fifth of the year.
In the second half, AIC had better play overall, but the Hawks tied the game on a Lucas Bravo Olle tally just past the 10-minute mark of the second half, scoring at 55:38.
The tie lasted only 12 seconds. Off the restart, Afonso fired the ball up the right wing side for Nicholas Chapman to run onto. He took one touch in before firing a cross that Botasso redirected home for his sixth of the season.
Both teams generated chances that required strong work by the goalkeepers, and the Hawks broke through again, taking advantage of possession deep in AIC territory as Olle netted his second of the game at 73:42.
AIC had an opportunity late as a second yellow against a Hawks player became a red, giving the Yellow Jackets a man-advantage with just over 13 minutes to play, but the Hawks defended well to preserve the draw.
AIC continues NE10 play Wednesday, October 23 at 3:00 p.m. at Bentley University.
