Inside shooting helps women's basketball fly past Queens
QUEENS, New York – The American International College women's basketball team shot 56.8 percent over the final 30 minutes to rout Queens College 72-50 in nonconference action on Monday, December 9.
AIC is now 5-4 on the season.
The Yellow Jackets opened with two quick buckets in the first minute, as Chelsea Reeves started the scoring and then set up Ruzgar Christina Boyle. The duo each hit another shot in the frame, but the Knights offense compiled 15 points of its own to lead 15-11 after one.
The Yellow Jackets quickly tied the game in the second, with Keyvanna Bennett tallying, and Rhaymi Porter knocking back a rebound. After Ashley Chio hit a jumper to restore Queens to the lead, Bennett found Boyle open for three, flipping AIC in front. Reeves then swiped the ball and set up Boyle for a lay-in. Both teams hit threes, with Peyton Grant finishing a Bennett feed, and Bennett also knocked down a shot off a pass from Porter to push AIC up 25-20 with 5:35 left in the frame.
The Yellow Jackets kept building the lead, with Reeves making two free throws and then hitting a three after Boyle found her open off of her own miss, putting the Yellow Jackets up by 10 for the first time at 30-20. Reeves and Boyle scored the rest of AIC's points in the quarter, and AIC brought a 37-25 advantage into halftime.
Determined not to led this lead slip, Bennett scored the first two buckets in the third frame, taking a Porter block the other way for a lay-in, then swiping the ball directly for a breakout she finished herself. Porter, Reeves, and Boyle all made shots as the period continued, building AIC's lead to 51-29 just past the midpoint of the quarter. That edge blossomed to as much as 28 at one point, and the third ended with AIC leading 59-33.
The fourth opened with Queens scoring twice in a desperate attempt to come back, only to be negated by Ahliya Phillips finishing a pair of passes by Boyle and Sarai Gurley knocking down a three from Boyle. AIC held the Knights at bay, and ended the game up 72-50.
Reeves shot 66.7 percent from the floor in leading the game with 20 points, while Boyle made a game-high nine field goals to score 19 points, impressively adding five assists, four rebounds, and four swipes. AIC's 34 rebounds were spread out, with Bennett's seven leading the Yellow Jackets by one and Porter and Phillips both grabbing six. Overall, AIC shot 53.6 percent from the field, including 65.0 percent from inside the arc.
The Yellow Jackets continue a midweek nonconference slate with a trip to Post University on Wednesday, December 11 at 5:00 p.m.
