Fourth quarter rally falls short for women's basketball at Franklin Pierce
RINDGE, New Hampshire - The American International College women's basketball team fell 65-61 to Franklin Pierce University in Northeast-10 Conference action on Sunday, January 5.
AIC is now 8-6 overall and 1-5 in the NE10.
Ruzgar Christina Boyle hit the game's first field goal, a deep shot from a pass from Eden Monka; Monka scored a two herself on AIC's next possession, as the teams traded the lead back and forth. The Ravens built to a 15-11 advantage, but the last bucket of the first was an and-one by Sarai Gurley, pulling the Yellow Jackets to within 15-14 at the first break.
The Ravens not only started the second on a run, they held AIC off the board for a significant chunk of time; Boyle knocked in the team's first points of the frame with just over four minutes to play with a field goal to bring the score to 21-16. However, AIC caught fire from there, as Boyle and Monka scored to force a Ravens timeout, and Chelsea Reeves and Peyton Grant both nailed triples in the final 31 seconds, with Grant beating the buzzer to put the Yellow Jackets in the lead, 26-25, at halftime.
In the third, Franklin Pierce took over. An early three from Grant belied what was to come as the Ravens scored 25 total and held AIC to just eight more after the initial basket. Keyvanna Bennett scored all eight of those points, but AIC found itself down 50-37 with one period left.
The Yellow Jackets went to work to start the fourth and quickly eviscerated the lead, with Boyle starting off the run with eight straight points and Grant bringing AIC within three on a finish off a feed from Ahliya Phillips. However, despite AIC drawing within two points on multiple occasions, the Ravens were able to hold on, and ultimately finished the 65-61 win.
Boyle was the game's scoring leader with 23, while Bennett had 11 and Reeves had 10. Boyle also led AIC with five assists and five boards.
AIC returns to action on Wednesday, January 8 at 5:30 p.m. at Adelphi University.
