SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts – Another split clean sheet and another nifty goal helped the American International College women's soccer team complete a perfect opening weekend as the Yellow Jackets downed Daemen University 1-0 on Sunday, September 8.
AIC is now 2-0-0 on the season.
The lone goal of the game was scored in the 16th minute as a deep pass from the left side of midfield by Leya Vorha was right to the feet of Gabrielle Williams. She was able to take a single touch past the goalkeeper before firing across just inside the right post at 15:28.
Both teams did have other chances. In the 36th minute, Kaitlyn Wright ran in from the right side of the 18-yard box with a shot, but AIC's Sara Avery dove to punch it away, and the defense cleared out the rebound. She also had another tough save on a sinking shot from Alyssa Diaz in the 41st minute.
In the early second half, Lily Shields nearly made it 2-0, with a header sailing just over the net in the 55th minute, and a few minutes later, Rhiann Ryan hit the crossbar with a header on a corner.
However, in the end, neither side scored again, leaving AIC with the win.
The Yellow Jackets next host the University of Maine-Fort Kent on Wednesday, September 11 at 7:00 p.m.
