Women's Volleyball sweeps Assumption in regular season road finale
WORCESTER, Massachusetts - On the road for the final time before postseason play begins, the American International College women's volleyball team handled business, hitting .387 on its way to a 25-15, 25-19, 25-21 Northeast-10 Conference win over Assumption University on Tuesday, November 12.
AIC is now 15-6 overall and 9-0 in the NE10.
AIC took a big lead early in the first set thanks in part to some errors by the Greyhounds, and the Yellow Jackets continued to pull away, collecting kills by Janelys Perez Cortes, Carissa Michel, and Jelena Milovanovic, as well as an ace by Victoria Mendez, to add to it. AIC led 21-12 after a six-point run, and the set ended when Mendez aced her second serve of the set just inside the Greyhounds right sideline.
The second set featured just as quick of a start for AIC, who led 8-2 as Aleksandra Lucic scored three kills, a block, and an ace and Mendez notched three kills. The Greyhounds briefly cut into the lead, only for AIC to run off with five straight and 10 of a stretch of 12 points to lead 19-10; the only two Assumption points in that stretch were AIC service errors. Perez Cortes gave AIC set point at 24-14, but it took six tries for AIC to close it out as the Greyhounds battled to 24-19 before finally falling on a Perez Cortes finish.
The host Greyhounds trailed, but had found some confidence in their game, and built a 7-3 lead early, forcing AIC to reconfigure its lineup somewhat; Yuleishka Alvelo Melendez was called upon as a defensive specialist and handled the very first ball in play with her on the floor, a serve, nicely. The Yellow Jackets remained steady, chipping away and tying the match 13-13. The Greyhounds persisted in keeping AIC tied or behind up through a score of 20-20, when Gabryela Castro de Jesus put AIC ahead for the first time since the fifth point of the set. AIC won all but one of the remaining points, finishing the match on a Castro de Jesus kill to complete the sweep.
The Yellow Jackets landed 46 kills to just five errors; Perez Cortes and Mendez led AIC with 13 and 12, with both hitting above .410, while Lucic made nine kills on just 12 swings for a blistering .750 attack percentage. Mendez also dished out 14 assists, with Alice Di Francesco leading AIC with 25, and Perla Rosa collected a match-best 21 digs.
AIC returns home to close out the regular season and will look for its first perfect NE10 slate ever with a 5:00 p.m. first serve against Pace University on Saturday, November 16. The Yellow Jackets will recognize their seniors prior to the contest.
