RINDGE, New Hampshire - It took "beyond regulation" in the most extreme sense possible, but the American International College field hockey team defeated Franklin Pierce University 2-1 with a seven-round shootout win to close out the 2023 campaign on Saturday, October 28.
AIC finishes 7-10 overall with a 4-9 Northeast-10 Conference mark.
The Ravens struck first in the second quarter as Vicky-Louise Witkamp found the net at 7:02.
Early in the third, AIC drew the game level. Off of a long corner, Mar Busqueta's pass found Dominique Bassallo just above the stroke dot, and she one-timed her shot into the left side of the cage for her third of the season at 1:47.
From there, the story was the goalkeeping. Taylor Wildes and Zoe Noorlag both faced serious pressure, but did not yield; the Ravens rookie stopped five third-quarter bids, while AIC's graduate netminder turned back two chances in the fourth, forcing overtime. Both keepers made stops in the extra session as well, and despite a combined six penalty corners in the 7-on-7, the game remained 1-1 after 80 minutes.
Even the shootout required extras; both Franklin Pierce and AIC went 3-for-5 in the opening portion of the shootout. After Anna Beck and Busqueta were stopped in the first extra round, Wildes stuffed Rebecca Phillips. That gave Brooke Szafran a chance to win it, and she made no mistake, cutting to the right of Noorlag and firing it home to end the season on a high note.
Wildes concluded the game with nine saves on 10 shots.
