SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts - A scoreless first half gave way to a back-and-forth battle in which the American International College men's soccer team defeated Adelphi University 2-1 in Northeast-10 Conference play on Saturday, October 28.
AIC is now 3-5-8 overall and 3-3-3 in the NE10.
The Yellow Jackets had the lone high quality chance of the first half, a late breakaway by Nicholas Chapman that Daniel De La Heras dove to stop to keep the game scoreless.
In the second, AIC broke through. Esben Guldager took a shot that hit teammate Simba Pelletier, but the rebound came right back to him. He fired again, hitting the net with the second effort for his first of the season at 56:05.
The Panthers came back to tie it in unusual fashion; a free kick was awarded along the goal line to the left of the box. Pablo Herrera's bid across bounced in at 65:17 to level the score.
In the 74th minute, AIC generated a three-on-two, and Jonathan Tekie was hauled down in the box by a Panthers defender, drawing a penalty kick. He took the chance himself, faking the goalkeeper with a stutter-step move before slotting his second of the season into the right corner at 73:09.
AIC held the game from there, pushing off an increasingly desperate Adelphi attack for the win. Lucas Morales-Fernandez made four saves to earn the victory in net.
AIC finishes the regular season with its Senior Night against Southern New Hampshire University on Tuesday, October 31 at 7:00 p.m.
