Lee's 27 not enough as Women's Basketball falls at Assumption
WORCESTER, Mass. – Briana Lee scored a season-high 27 points and tied a career high with four made three-pointers as the American International College women's basketball team fell to Assumption University 74-58 in Northeast-10 Conference play on Saturday, December 30.
AIC falls to 8-2 on the season and 3-2 in NE10 play. It marked the first of six consecutive NE10 battles.
The Yellow Jackets scored the first five points of the game, with Lee surprising the Greyhounds by knocking down a straightaway three on AIC's second possession. After being held off the scoreboard for the first two minutes and 40 seconds, the Greyhounds would tie the game at 12 with 4:35 left in the first quarter, but AIC came out of the first with a 16-14 lead.
With 54 seconds gone in the second quarter, AIC saw its lead snatched by a three from Molly Stokes; they would not lead again. The Greyhounds accelerated out to a nine-point halftime lead behind a 24-13 second quarter.
Assumption opened the third quarter on a 6-0 run and did not let the Yellow Jackets come within single digits for the rest of the game. The Greyhounds held the Yellow Jackets without a made field goal until 3:52 left. Although Yellow Jackets got the Greyhounds in foul trouble to the tune of 11 free throw attempts and ended the period on a 9-3 run, they were still outscored 21-17 in the period as Assumption shot 61.5 percent from the floor.
The Greyhounds continued to seize the energy from their shooting and the Laska Gymnasium crowd in the fourth quarter, knocking down five of nine attempts, including their lone three-point attempt. They held the Yellow Jackets to 5-for-18 from the floor.
Outside of Lee, the Yellow Jackets shot 2-for-17 from the perimeter, including 1-for-14 in the first half. AIC's second leading scorer, behind Lee, was Kayla Robinson with 11, of which six came at the free throw line. Five of AIC's six made three-pointers came from the left corner, from which they were perfect.
Battles at the boards were physical, with few rebounds being controlled cleanly off the basket. Assumption won the rebounding battle 39 to 29. AIC forward Rhaymi Porter only played four minutes and 53 seconds in the first half with foul trouble.
The Yellow Jackets return home on Wednesday, January 3 to open the new year and a two-game homestand against the College of Saint Rose. Tip-off is at 5:30 PM on the NE10Now Network.
