SAINT AUGUSTINE, Florida - The American International College baseball team was swept in a three-game series at Flagler University, falling 5-1, 25-6, and 6-5 in a series played February 23-25.
AIC is now 1-6 on the season.
AIC struck first in the opener on a Brendan Edvardsen walk and then Josh Frometa's reach on an error at third; Kiernan Caffrey doubled in the first run with the first hit of the series. However, the Saints took the lead in the second on a two-run home run and never looked back, adding a third in the inning and then two more in the sixth. Jesse Sullivan was responsible for both the longball as well as the two-run insurance double.
In the middle game, early on it was back and forth; Edvardsen, Frometa, and Caffrey all reached to load the bases, and Jackson Haker and Tyler Ziemak drove in runs with sacrifice flies, but the Saints tied it in the home half and took a 3-2 lead through two frames. Haker came to the dish with one on in the third and launched a missile over the fence in left to put AIC back in front, but in the fourth Flagler's offense caught fire, scoring 22 runs over the middle frames to ultimately win 25-6, despite another home run for Haker.
The finale was a tale of two halves; the first five innings were scoreless as Ethan Teixeira and Benjamin Stubbs battled it out against the hitters before the Yellow Jackets scored two unearned in the sixth on a muffed throw with the bases loaded. The Saints again battled back to take the lead, but AIC countered, as Haker drew a bases loaded walk and Segura smacked a two-run single to push AIC up 5-3. It was not to be, however; the Saints tied the game in the eighth and walked off in the ninth for the sweep.
Apart from leading AIC's offense, Haker's first home run in the middle game was the 100th hit of his NCAA career.
The team next faces the University of Bridgeport on March 1.
