Baseball drops slugfest with Owls
SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts - The American International College baseball team lost a high-scoring affair with Southern Connecticut State University on Wednesday, March 23, falling 21-13 to the Owls in AIC's home opener.
The Yellow Jackets are now 5-9 on the year.
The Yellow Jackets struck first in the first inning, as Brendan Edvardsen led off with a walk and swiped second. That allowed Kiernan Caffrey to drive him in on a hit to right.
In the third, however, the Owls erupted for five runs, with a two-run single by Colin Mason and a three-run double from Derrick Jagello. A Jackson Haker RBI single pushed another run across for AIC in the home half, but the Owls offense had kicked into gear, and they posted four, six, and five runs in the three middle frames.
AIC did put up some impressive numbers of its own, with an Edvardsen RBI double in the fourth and multi-run frames in the fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth; Haker and Chad Lavelle boh hit RBI singles, while Connor Daly and Edvardsen each forced in runs with a walk and hit by pitch respectively for a four-run fifth, Haker went yard as part of a two-run sixth, and Caffrey and Haker both drove in runs in the seventh while Edvardsen and Cameron Fitzgerald pushed runners across in the eighth.
At the end of the eighth, with the game nearing the four-hour mark, the umpiring crew called off the game due to darkness.
AIC opens Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division play on Friday, March 25 at noon with the first game of a four-game series with Southern New Hampshire University.
