Men's Rugby finishes 15th at CRCs
BOYDS, Maryland - The American International College men's rugby team went 2-3 at the Collegiate Rugby Championship National 7s Tournament on April 26-27, finishing 15th overall.
AIC opened with Principia in the Round of 32, and dispatched the Thunder Chickens with relative ease. Demitrius Ta'ape and Patric Maclin scored a try each and Mateo Castro knocked in a conversion for a 12-0 victory.
The next round featured a battle with the University of Michigan, and though Maclin scored again and Filimone Manu notched a try and converted, the Wolverines were able to earn a 19-12 win to push AIC into the Plate bracket.
In the Plate Quarterfinal, the Yellow Jackets battled Dartmouth College and it was a high-scoring affair. Both teams landed four tries, with Terry Jayaguru scoring twice and Augusto Arguello and Juan Carrazana each adding a try, but the Big Green hit two conversions that made the difference in the 24-20 final.
On the second day, AIC battled Southern Virginia in an early-morning tilt. Carrazana and Israel Martinez both put down tries and Castro connected on a conversion, but Southern Viriginia saw three tries and converted them all to win 21-12.
In AIC's final match against Siena, the Yellow Jackets offense clicked to score six times and convert four; Carrazana put two to the ground, while Ta'ape, Jayaguru, and Tyler Cathers each had one. Arguello scored a try and a conversion, while Manu kicked two conversions through and Castro booted the final one for a 38-0 win.
