WALTHAM, Massachusetts - For the second time in three days, the American International College baseball team split a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader at Bentley University, falling 7-4 but rebounding for a season-best 19 runs in a 19-5 win on Sunday, April 2.
AIC is now 7-16 overall and 2-6 in the NE10.
The Yellow Jackets opened with a bang in game one as Jackson Haker doubled in Kiernan Caffrey and Brendan Edvardsen; that two-run lead lasted until the second when Bentley plated a pair.
In the fourth, AIC regained the lead on a wild sequence. After singles by Brandon Gaul and Chad Lavelle, Yeudy Ramirez singled to left center; the center fielder misplayed the ball, allowing Lavelle to score in addition to Gaul. However, one frame later, the Falcons erupted for five runs, and that was the difference as they held AIC off the win the seven-inning game.
The Yellow Jackets bounceed back in a big way in game two. After a pair of scoreless frames, Josh Frometa launched AIC onto the scoreboard with a two-run bomb to left. Two innings later, Lavelle and Shea Cuccinotta hit back-to-back doubles to drive in runs and Frometa sacrificed Cuccinotta in as well. In the sixth, the team had its biggest inning yet, keyed by a pair of walks and a defensive miscue. Frometa came in big again with a two-run double as part of the four-run frame and AIC's lead was 9-0.
The Falcons did net two in the bottom half, but AIC's lead was insurmountable, which did not stop the Yellow Jackets from adding another five in each of the final two frames. Frometa was at it again with a two-run triple, and Tyler Ziemak smacked a three-run double to put the game out of reach in the eighth, and in the ninth AIC scored a bundle of runs again, also closed out with a two-run hit by Ziemak.
Jay Chiapetta had a strong outing on the mound, going seven frames with two runs on nine hits, fanning four and walking none.
AIC opens a three-game series with the University of Bridgeport on Friday, April 7 at 3:00 p.m.; the teams will battle once in Connecticut before returning to Springfield for a pair the following day.
