SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts - The American International College baseball team split the second day of Northeast-10 Conference doubleheaders with Saint Anselm College on Saturday, April 22, winning 9-6 before falling 13-2 in the finale.
AIC is now 18-18 overall and 9-7 in the NE10.
The Hawks scored the game's first two runs, as Zach Clough smacked a two-out, two-run single in the second. They then added an unearned run in the third.
All of those runs were countered just three batters into the home half of the frame; after a double by Yeudy Ramirez and a single by Ryan Lavelle, Brendan Edvardsen launched a three-run shot to tie the game. Josh Frometa and Kiernan Caffrey followed with singles and Tyler Ziemak added a hit as well, driving in Frometa to give AIC the lead.
Saint Anselm tied the game in the fourth, but AIC untied it with another big inning; Cruz singled and Lavelle drove him in. Edvardsen and Frometa then walked to load the bases, and Jackson Haker took advantage with a two-run hit to left.
After the Hawks added another in the fifth, AIC scored two. Three straight walks loaded the bases, with Michael Cruz then coming home on a wild pitch. Frometa's sacrifice fly two batters later brought Ramirez home, giving AIC a 9-5 lead that the team held for the 9-6 win and the series victory with it.
The Hawks salvaged the finale, scoring six in the third inning of the contest including a grand slam to avoid being swept.
AIC will next play Post University on Wednesday, April 26 at 3:30 p.m.
