SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts - Maybe all the Yellow Jackets needed was some home cooking.
The talent was on full display as the American International College women's volleyball team swept the first day of the 2024 International Volleyball Hall of Fame East Region Clash, dropping Southern New Hampshire University 25-16, 25-22, 25-17 and then doing the same to Saint Michael's College with set scores of 25-18, 25-17, and 25-10.
AIC is now 3-6 overall; neither match counted towards the Northeast-10 Conference standings.
The Penmen jumped to a 4-1 lead in the first set, but AIC quickly countered, leveling the score at 12-12 before scoring the next eight points. Ultimately, Jelena Milovanovic and Kiya Yeoman delivered a block to end the set.
From there, AIC cruised; a six-point run midway through the second set put the Yellow Jackets in front for good, with Aleksandra Lucic smacking down an overpass for the set-point kill, and AIC stacked up short runs to finish off the sweep, with Milovanovic scoring the match point.
Victoria Mendez opened the first set against the Purple Knights with a pair of aces around an attack error on the other side, and though Saint Michael's did close to within 18-17 midway through the set, two Mendez kills and a block by Lucic and Gabryela Castro de Jesus turned the tide back in AIC's favor. Lucic tacked on two more kills before Castro de Jesus finished the set with one of her own.
The second set was close early as well, but with AIC up 11-7, Mendez led another run, with a pair of aces as part of seven straight points for the Yellow Jackets. From there, AIC coasted to the set victory, with Lucic once again driving home the 25th point.
The Yellow Jackets left no doubt in the third, scoring 13 of the first 14 points on runs with Mendez and then Daniella Russo-Lolas serving; AIC was able to empty the bench to get almost everyone playing time, and with Zorybeth Febres serving, Claudia Flores Marrero completed the match with the final kill of the evening.
Carissa Michel was incredible on the day, with 14 kills and a .565 attack percentage against the Penmen and seven more with a .400 attack percentage against the Purple Knights. Mendez dished out a combined 44 assists in the six sets along with seven kills and six aces, while Flores Marrero led AIC with 24 total digs. Lucic also compiled 17 kills and hit .577 combined between the matches, along with 10 blocks.
AIC closes the home tournament at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 28 against the University of Bridgeport.
