Women's Volleyball reverse sweeps Post
WATERBURY, Connecticut - Trailing 2-0, the American International College women's volleyball team rallied for a 3-2 win against Post University with set scores of 25-27, 22-25, 25-5, 25-11, and 15-12 on Wednesday, September 11.
AIC is now 1-3 on the year.
Although the Yellow Jackets started the match on a 4-0 run, the Eagles just as quickly tied things and took a 9-6 lead. It was an even battle from there through to 25-25, but the home squad notched the final two points of the set to win a 1-0 advantage.
AIC once again led in the second, building to a 16-11 edge, before the Eagles went on a run of five straight points to tie it and ultimately took the lead after an AIC timeout. Post pulled away to win the set.
Now down a pair, AIC needed a rally. They quickly built a 9-4 lead in the third before exploding for an incredible run, scoring the last 16 points of the set thanks in part to three different combo blocks by Kiya Yeoman and Victoria Mendez as well as a series of kills and aces by several players.
It was now Post playing on its heels, and the Yellow Jackets took advantage in the fourth, with multiple runs of five out of six points and six of the final seven, including a Janelys Perez Cortez kill to force a fifth and deciding set.
As the Yellow Jackets had, the Eagles were able to get settled heading to the fifth. Both teams traded runs and the lead, with AIC pulling ahead 5-3, then falling behind 6-5, then pushing back to a 9-6 edge. The set was tied at 11-11 when AIC made its move, closing on a run to win 15-12 and take the match.
Jelena Milovanovic led AIC with 16 kills and added a dozen digs, while Perez Cortes landed 14 kills. Mendez had one of the more impressive statlines of the season, with eight kills on 14 swings, 43 assists, three aces, 21 digs, and seven blocks.
AIC returns to action Friday, September 13 at Bentley University's Sandy Hoffman Memorial Tournament. The Yellow Jackets will face the University of New Haven at 2:00 p.m. and the host Falcons at 7:00 p.m. before finishing on Saturday, September 14 at 3:30 p.m. against Daemen University.
