SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts - Forced to play much of the contest against the University of New Haven with just 10 on the field due to injuries, the American International College field hockey team put up a spirited fight, ultimately dropping a 5-1 decision to the University of New Haven on Saturday, October 5 in Northeast-10 Conference play.
AIC is now 5-4 overall and 3-2 in the NE10.
The Chargers scored the game's first goal on a penalty stroke just 5:15 in, with Paige Garrett converting the opportunity.
In the second, down a player, the Yellow Jackets leveled the score on a brilliant team effort. Mia Wood dished from the midfield to Fenna Voll on the left side of the circle. Voll drove the ball in to Victoria Nelson as Wood cut toward the net, and Nelson battled to get the ball near to the stroke dot. Wood won a stick battle and Maddie Darling tipped the ball back to Wood for a shot that hit the cage at 1:45 of the frame.
From there, AIC held off the Chargers until the third, when a second penalty stroke, this time by Johannah Lee, gave New Haven back the lead at 10:06.
New Haven tacked on three in the third for the 5-1 final.
Frederique den Hartog stopped nine shots, while Morgan Martellio made two defensive saves.
AIC next visits Assumption University on Wednesday, October 9 at 7:00 p.m.
