Women's Rugby breaks 100 in Senior Day success vs. Frostburg State
SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts - The American International College women's rugby team put 50 points on the board in the first half, then one-upped itself in the second for a 101-12 National Intercollegiate Rugby Association win over Frostburg State University on Sunday, October 6.
AIC is now 3-1 overall with a 2-0 mark in NIRA Division II play.
The offense was relentless for the Yellow Jackets, who scored less than five minutes in thanks to Annekkia Ritter-Truxal touching down the ball, with Venise Sanft converting. Naomi Dodd then scored twice in just over a one-minute span, including a steal on the AIC defensive side of the field that she was able to turn back and carry over 60 yards.
Isa Van de Zand and Ritter-Truxal both scored, with Sanft kicking through for conversions, before the Bobcats used a strong push up the middle after a lineout deep in AIC territory to break the shutout; Molly Wentling put the ball down over the line.
Louisa Justice, Camryn Henderson, and Jendell Moe countered with three tries in a 4:57 span, with a Henderson conversion accounting for two more points and ultimately giving AIC the advantage at the break, 50-5.
Luna Bussing, Van de Zand, and Morgan Schechter each took tries in within the first six minutes of the second half to ensure that the momentum kept up, and Brianna Helman drove over the line as well at 11:03 of the half to extend AIC's lead to 70-5.
Scout Spadoni scored Frostburg's second try of the day near the midpoint of the half, with Natalie Allen converting.
AIC closed the game with a thirty-one point run; Van de Zand completed her hat trick, and Talimaia Fuala'au and Angel Davis each scored twice, with an impressive run by Davis on her first. Henderson nailed each of the last three conversions, the final one with no time left on the clock as the Yellow Jackets broke the 100-point barrier in the win.
The Yellow Jackets next face a NIRA Division I opponent, Quinnipiac University, on the road on Saturday, October 12 at 1:00 p.m.
