Two Thousand and Won! Ice Hockey takes shootout victory from Ohio State on milestone night
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Josh Barnes scored two goals in regulation and the deciding tally in the fifth round of the shootout as the American International College ice hockey team defeated Ohio State University 2-1 in a shootout after a 3-3 score through 65 minutes in the 2000th game in the history of the AIC program.
AIC is now 0-1-1 overall on the season.
The Buckeyes had much of the pressure in the first period, but it seemed destined to reach the locker room tied 0-0 before the home side lit the lamp at 19:55.7, with James Hong scoring for a 1-0 Ohio State lead.
Nathan McBrayer doubled the home advantage just before the midpoint, tucking a shot home at 8:09 of the second.
The Yellow Jackets cut the deficit back to one shortly after as Oscar Geschwind found Timofei Khokhlachev for a chance that was saved, but Barnes was able to bang the rebound home for his first of the season at 11:36.
In the third, Barnes tied the game, finishing a feed from Alexander Malinowski at 5:51 for his second of the game and season.
Dario Beljo then gave AIC the lead shortly after, taking a pass from John Lundy and hitting the twine for his first of the year at 7:25.
The Buckeyes pushed, and with their goalkeeper on the bench, tied the contest at 19:08.4 as Max Montes was able to score.
In the overtime, Gunnarwolfe Fontaine scored an apparent game-winning tally that the Yellow Jackets challenged. The play was ruled offside, allowing the contest to continue.
In the shootout, Ohio State scored first as Hong tallied in the opening round, but Noah Serdachny tied things in the second round.
After both teams had their third and fourth shooters stopped, Barnes was able to light the lamp, and Chase Clark stuffed Fontaine to secure victory for AIC.
Clark's four shootout saves came after a masterful performance where he denied 47 bids in 65 minutes.
"Anytime you can go on the road and clip a Big Ten team, we're obviously happy about that. However, we need to be able to close that out in regulation. We are passing up too many scoring opportunities as a team right now," Head Coach Eric Lang said, before adding "Our PK and Chase Clark were terrific. I'm ecstatic for Josh Barnes who does everything the right way and was rewarded tonight."
The Yellow Jackets and Buckeyes will close out the series on Saturday, October 12 at 7:00 p.m.
