DOBBS FERRY, New York - The American International College men's soccer team held No. 20 Mercy University scoreless for a half before ultimately falling 4-1 in nonconference play on Wednesday, October 16.
AIC is now 0-6-3 overall and remains 0-2-2 in Northeast-10 Conference play.
Lucas Morales-Fernandez played strong in the first half, stopping three chances on target. AIC was mostly even with the Mavericks, with the shots favoring the hosts 6-4 and the Yellow Jackets generating the only corner kick of the first 45 minutes.
However, the Mavericks broke through quickly out of halftime on their first corner, with Julian Holland heading home Antonio Sas's service at 47:48. Less than ten minutes later, Sas set up Johannes Hanken Tjostheim in front of the net, who tallied at 57:33 for a 2-0 lead.
Tjostheim scored a second goal at 68:41, and then set up Sas for the fourth Mavericks goal at 74:26.
AIC broke the shutout just under five minutes later. Nicholas Chapman took a free kick and fed it up the right side for Pietro Botasso, who drove deep into Maverick territory before firing a sharp-angled shot just inside the left post for his third of the year at 79:10.
The Yellow Jackets return home and to NE10 action on Saturday, October 19 at 1:00 p.m. against Saint Anselm College.
