Women's Rugby dominates second half to surpass Bowdoin
BRUNSWICK, Maine - The American International College women's rugby team outscored Bowdoin College 43-0 in the second half of a 57-5 victory in National Intercollegiate Rugby Association interdivisional action on Friday, September 27.
AIC is now 2-1 overall, and remains 1-0 in NIRA Division II.
Ivana Kiripati scored the game's first try in the eighth minute, with Camryn Henderson converting for a 7-0 lead, but the host Polar Bears bounced back with a try less than three minutes later, although the kick missed to keep AIC ahead by two.
That was all the scoring for the first half until the very end. With time winding down, Naomi Dodd continued her hot streak, putting the ball over the try line for a score with just 20 seconds to go, and Henderson converted again for a 14-5 AIC halftime lead.
Bolstered by the momentum, the Yellow Jackets quickly put the game away after the break. Kiyanah Edwards struck for a score three minutes into the second, and Henderson again converted; less than five minutes later, Morgan Schechter touched the ball to the ground, and hardly two minutes passed before another Dodd try with a Henderson conversion, putting AIC ahead 33-5 in the 51st minute of play.
Dodd scored another pair of tries in the final 20 minutes of regulation, while Schechter and Venise Sanft each tallied once more, with Henderson connecting on two conversions, for the 57-5 final.
AIC returns to NIRA Division II play on Sunday, October 6 at 1:00 p.m. against Frostburg State University. It will be the team's Senior Day game.
