DOBBS FERRY, New York - The American International College field hockey team dropped a 2-0 decision to Mercy University in Northeast-10 Conference play on Saturday, October 19.
AIC is now 6-7 overall and 4-5 in the NE10.
Both of the Mavericks goals came on penalty strokes. Kasey Volz opened the scoring at 7:50 of the first, and Jessica Evans put one away at 0:32 of the third.
It was an even game despite the calls, as AIC put 13 balls on target to Mercy's 11. Both teams saw strong goalkeeping, with eight saves for AIC's Frederique den Hartog and 11 by Mercy's Alexandra Giordano.
Both teams also made multiple defensive saves; Eunice Santiago and Reagan Lane pulled shots off the line for the Mavericks, while Victoria Nelson and Morgan Martellio had defensive stops for the Yellow Jackets.
Martellio made two defensive saves; the first midway through the second on a Charlotte Sabert bid, while the second came early in the third on a Madison Brefka chance. That gave her 11 on the season, tying the single-season mark set by Katrina Heterbring '11 in 2009 and matched by Chelsea Davis '19 in both 2017 and 2018.
The Yellow Jackets return home on Wednesday, October 23 against No. 9 Saint Anselm College. The game is set for 7:00 p.m.
