Women's Volleyball dominates Adelphi in NE10 opener
SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts - In the team's first true Northeast-10 Conference contest, American International College women's volleyball posted a statement win, hitting .282 in a 25-18, 25-22, 25-10 sweep of Adelphi University on Saturday, October 5.
AIC is now 5-6 overall and 1-0 in the NE10.
Adelphi scored the first two points of the match, but a four-point run early put AIC ahead 6-3 and forced an early Panthers timeout. The team steadied, and pulled close a few times, but the Yellow Jackets held the Panthers at bay, pulling away with a 7-3 strech late in the set and ending it with a Carissa Michel kill.
The Panthers took charge early in the second, starting with a 5-0 run before a pair of Janelys Perez Cortes kills broke the streak. AIC quickly recovered with a four-point run of its own, keyed by two strong hits to the wood by Victoria Mendez, and took the lead on an ace by Mendez shortly later at 12-11. The two teams went back-and-forth from there, but the hosts stayed ahead, and an error on set point secured a 2-0 advantage for AIC.
The third set was all Yellow Jackets as Aleksandra Lucic bookended a Kiya Yeoman kill with a block and an ace, and a big run built AIC to a 17-5 lead. The home team handled business down the stretch, closing out the first conference win of 2024 on a Panthers service error.
Michel had an incredible day hitting, with 12 kills and no errors on 26 swings, along with three blocks. Mendez dominated as well, with nine kills and a .400 attack percentage to go with 18 assists, five digs, and three blocks. Alice Di Francesco dished nine assists and nine digs, while Lucic compiled six blocks.
The Yellow Jackets next head to Rindge, New Hampshire for a 7:00 p.m. battle with Franklin Pierce University on Tuesday, October 9.
