SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts - Fighting the momentum of a Saint Thomas Aquinas College team that had struck twice in the fourth frame to even the score, the American International College field hockey team converted a corner 2:23 into overtime to earn a 3-2 win in Northeast-10 Conference play on Saturday, September 28.
AIC is 5-2 overall and 3-0 in the NE10; the team has won its first three NE10 games for the first time since 2016.
A sluggish first period saw the Spartans control play, but it was AIC that took the lead as Fenna Voll fed Maddie Darling right at the stroke dot. The sophomore was able to walk in and fire her third of the season at 14:10.
In the second, Mar Busqueta doubled the lead, taking a free hit off of a foul and driving into the top of the circle before blasting in her first of the campaign at 10:20 of the period.
The third came and went without any scoring, but the Spartans cut the AIC lead in half at 2:58 of the fourth as Phileine Langeveld drove in from the right side and was able to push a shot through into the net.
Late in the final period of regulation, the visiting squad tied the game on a penalty corner as Hailey Galison fired in a shot off of a pass by Nicola Van Vuuren. The tying marker was scored at 11:30 of the frame.
Forced into overtime for the fourth straight game, the Yellow Jackets worked quickly, and drew a corner just past the two-minute mark of the extra session. Brooke Szafran's insert went to the top of the circle for Busqueta, who dished left for Voll. The sophomore cut toward the goal line before firing a shot that Szafran deflected in for her third of the season to win the contest.
AIC's Frederique den Hartog stopped four shots in the victory. Voll, in addition to nabbing a pair of assists, made a defensive save.
The Yellow Jackets continue NE10 play when Bentley University visits Springfield on Tuesday, October 1 at 7:00 p.m.
