Women's Basketball finds offense in win over Saint Thomas Aquinas
SPARKILL, New York – The American International College women's basketball team earned a 75-64 win over Saint Thomas Aquinas College on Saturday, November 9 to sweep the 2024 East Region Challenge.
AIC is now 2-0 on the season.
The Yellow Jackets showed up clearly determined to improve upon the offensive struggles from their season opener a night previous, combining to hit nine shots including four from deep to score 26 in the opening frame and lead by 14. Chelsea Reeves posted six of those points, while both Ruzgar Christina Boyle and Ahliya Phillips netted five. Eden Monka did not score, but she aided the team's success with six rebounds, and Rhaymi Porter blocked three Spartan attempts in the opening stanza.
Reeves continued her hot shooting in the second, going 3-of-4 to score another six points. Porter also blocked two more shots and grabbed four rebounds. The Spartans did outscore AIC slightly, 17-15, in the frame, but AIC held a halftime lead of 41-29.
The Yellow Jackets kept hitting shots in the third, landing 53.8 percent of their field goal attempts, led once again by Reeves, who made three buckets and four free throws for a 10-point quarter. Porter scored four points of her own and blocked another pair, while Boyle notched five to put AIC ahead 62-44 after three.
The offense cooled in the fourth, and the Spartans made a late push, but the lead was too big to overcome, with a pair of threes from Boyle leading AIC's 13 points in the frame. Porter hauled in eight more rebounds and scored on both free throw attempts to cement a double-double and put away the 75-64 victory.
Reeves scored a game-high 22 total, while Boyle added 19; Porter narrowly missed a triple double with the 10 points, 16 rebounds, and seven blocks. Her 32 boards through two games is the most of anyone in the Northeast-10 Conference, women or men.
AIC opens home and conference play on Wednesday, November 13 against Saint Anselm College at 5:30 p.m.
