Assumption sneaks by Women's Basketball
SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts - A late rally by Assumption University led the Greyhounds to a 53-52 win over the American International College women's basketball team on Tuesday, January 14.
AIC is now 9-8 overall and 2-7 in the NE10.
The Yellow Jackets jumped out to an early lead thanks to the deep ball, as both Ruzgar Christina Boyle and Sarai Gurley drained a pair of threes, and Peyton Grant added a make from range as well, accounting for five of the six field goals AIC made in the opening quarter. The team scored 18 points in total and led by eight at the break.
The second frame was strong defensively for the Yellow Jackets, who only allowed one Greyhound to make a field goal at all in the 10-minute stretch. Chelsea Reeves scored six of AIC's 15 points, giving the Yellow Jackets a 33-20 lead heading into the locker room.
Assumption began to push for a comeback in the third, outscoring AIC 13-11 in the frame thanks mostly to three makes by Molly Stokes. Ahliya Phillips accounted for six of AIC's points thanks to a 2-for-2 showing both from the field and the line, keeping AIC up 44-33 through half an hour.
In the final frame, the Greyhounds caught fire. They shot 8-of-13 as a team and four different players scored at least four points, while holding the Yellow Jackets to just eight points, and ultimately held on to a 53-52 win.
Rhaymi Porter had AIC's strongest overall showing, with six points, 11 rebounds, and seven blocks.
AIC returns to play Saturday, January 18 at 1:30 p.m. at Southern New Hampshire University.
