Avery's goalkeeping, Mercier's tally help women's soccer tie Saint Anselm
MANCHESTER, New Hampshire - A strong showing in net and a late tally combined to earn the American International College women's soccer team a Northeast-10 Conference standings point in a 1-1 draw at Saint Anselm College on Tuesday, October 22.
AIC is now 5-5-3 overall and 1-3-3 in the NE10.
The Hawks generated five corners and put five shots on target in the opening 45 minutes, but Sara Avery stood tall, slamming the door repeatedly on every challenge she faced.
In the second, the Hawks finally broke through; a cross from left to right found Riley DiGilio, who was able to chip a shot that hit the inside of the right post and then the net at 62:22.
AIC put on its best push of the game offensively over the next 11 minutes and it paid off. Lily Shields took a pass in the middle of the field just above the 18-yard box and was able to push forward before firing a ball between two defenders and right at the feet of Sydney Mercier. She was able to stay onside and control the pass, stepping into a shot that she slotted low right and just out of the reach of the Hawks goalkeeper at 73:16 for her second of the year.
Saint Anselm, trying to get its lead back, managed nine shots after the tying goal, with three on target, but Avery stopped them all, finishing off the game with nine stops total and a 1-1 draw.
The Yellow Jackets return home for Senior Day on Saturday, October 26 at 3:00 p.m. against Pace University.
