Ice Hockey bounces back to earn split with Canisius
SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts - The margins in a game sometimes are as thin as the blade of a skate.
That held true for the American International College ice hockey team, which earned a 3-2 Atlantic Hockey America win over Canisius University thanks to a scoreless third period after a second-period comeback on Saturday, January 25.
AIC is now 8-17-1 with a 6-12-0-0-0-2 AHA mark.
The Yellow Jackets opened the scoring with a strong effort to prevent Canisius from clearing, and Justin Mexico was able to fire a cross pass from the right point to the left corner for Theo Angesved. The defenseman in turn dished to Dario Beljo at the left circle, and he spun and fired the puck under the right side of the crossbar for his fifth of the season at 9:38.
The lead lasted until late in the first, when the Golden Griffins drew a penalty and tied the game on the man advantage. Trey Funk put back a third-chance opportunity after a save by Chase Clark and a block by Evan Stella, tying the contest at 17:17.
In the second, Canisius took the lead. Carter Patterson found Alton McDermott open in the slot as the trailer on a rush play, and his one-timer lit the lamp at 8:51.
Just over a minute later, AIC equalized. Wilhelm Forsberg poked the puck out of AIC's defensive end and then fired to the center of the Canisius blue line onto the tape of Mexico's stick. The rookie winger dished to Beljo, who was coming in on the left side, and Beljo did the rest, toe-dragging past a defenseman and wiring in his sixth of the campaign at 10:19.
Late in the third, Forsberg forced a turnover deep in Canisius territory by pressuring the defense and driving it behind the net. Oscar Geschwind deflected the pass to Lauri Sertti at the point, and Sertti set up Alfred Lindberg in the slot for a wrister that snuck inside the post for his fourth of the season at 18:02.
The third period belonged to Clark, who was excellent in stopping 15 shots in the frame, including a point-blank chance from Canisius's Hobey Baker Award nominee Matteo Giampa at the side of the net with just over five minutes to play. He made 33 saves in total for the win.
AIC is now off until February 7, when the Yellow Jackets open a two-game set at Mercyhurst University. Puck drop is set for 7:00 p.m.
