TO THE 'SHIP! Women's Rugby cruises past Frostburg in NIRA DII Semifinals
SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts - The American International College women's rugby team punched its ticket to the National Intercollegiate Rugby Association Division II Championship Game for the second time in four years with a resounding 104-12 win over Frostburg State University on Sunday, November 17.
AIC is now 6-2 on the season.
SaTya Miller and Ro'Elenoa Lagilagi helped AIC burst out to a 12-0 lead in the first 5:22 of play, aided by a Venise Sanft conversion.
Shortly after, Mahina Hafoka and Naomi Dodd put their names on the scoresheet less than two minutes apart. Isa Van de Zand converted both kicks, pushing AIC ahead 26-0 less than 15 minutes into play.
The Yellow Jackets kept pouring it on down the stretch of the first half. Azariah Walker put the ball down over the line, followed by second tries from Dodd, Miller, and Lagilagi before the game was 30 minutes old, with Van de Zand converting three out of four kicks to extend the lead to 52-0 with 11 minutes left in the half.
Dodd completed a hat trick, and Van de Zand closed the half with a try of her own, successfully converting both for a 66-0 AIC edge at the break.
Out of halftime, Miller scored in the first minute of play, followed by tries by Sara Doyle and Dodd before the 10-minute mark of the half. Doyle struck again, and Kiyanah Edwards broke through right after the midpoint of the period, as AIC's lead ballooned to 99-0.
Frostburg State finally broke the shutout with 11:33 to play as Cami Garcia pushed the ball across the line, with Natalie Allen converting. Shortly after, Awa Kanta scored for the Bobcats with AIC down a player.
However, the game's final score was by the Yellow Jackets, with Jaysa Jo Paulsen putting the ball home for the 104-12 final, nearly a mirror of the 101-12 result in the regular season meeting between the squads.
AIC will face Davenport University in the NIRA Division II Championship Game on Saturday, November 23. The game will be held at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire, and kickoff time is to be determined.
